Depending on the style of pizza that I want, which is usually Square Deep Dish (Sicilian) or Chicago-Style Stuffed pizza, the best is Loui's or PizzaPapalis in the metro Detroit area. The crust at Loui's is simulataneously crunchy and chewy and the sauce is superb. At PizzaPapalis, the sauce is outstanding. the crust is golden brown on the outside and the toppings are very well-balanced to create an exceptional pizza. Both have won "Best Pizza in Detroit" awards.

Whereabouts are these restaurants? As I'm up in Lapeer county, anything in the northern tier of what is routinely called "Detroit" will be my 1st stops on a pizza crawl...

Thanks for posting!!

Hi there.

Loui's Pizza is located in Hazel Park, near Hazel Park Raceway, at 9 mile and Dequindre. Pizza Papalis has several locations including a location near Greenfield Village on Michigan Ave and Downtown Detroit, right across from the Greektown Casino.

Found em!

I've been to one of the Buddy's locations many moons ago and that must have been where the "square deep dish" hook 1st got set in my palate. Loui's is on my hit-list when I next venture down M-24 and Pizza Papalis will also be investigated. But I think Loui's is after my heart based on the reviews I've found and read... and triggers some memories of the late Palace Pizzeria in Flint.

Thank you again for the info. MUCHO APPRECIATED.

As I no longer live in the Detroit area, one thing that I do when I make it over there is to buy a few extras to-go. I then wrap them up in foil and freeze them and when I want a good Detroit Pizza, I just take it out of the freezer and put it in a 350 degree oven until the pizza starts to sizzle. I find it better to have the pizza fully baked instead of "half-baked" because the crust comes out the way it would from the restaurant.
