I feel the need to add a few more Ohio pizzarias to the list since the list is missing some biggies.

First, though, I would like to say that Angellos' is an all-around fantastic italian restaurant. Better than their pizza even is their bread. Sounds dumb but I love the simple things. Simple white bread, simple vinaigrette, very good. Pasta, gnocchi, everything is awesome.

DeCarlos Pizza- Wintersville/Steubenville, OH

After returning from his service in Italy in WWII, Primo DeCarlo opened a restaurant to serve a dish soldiers lined up for called pizza. DeCarlos holds the first pizza license in the State of Ohio and is one of the few places that sells by the slice. The construction of the pizza is unique inthat they only prepare whole sheet pizzas with plain sauce. Then, as customers enter, the appropriate amount of pieces are removed, topped, boxed, and sent on their way. The result is a supreme cracker crunch on the bottom with a pillowy top to the crust. Since the cheese is not cooked and only warms and melts slightly, the flavor is not cooked out and provides an absolutely unique experience. If you are skeptical, have your favorite local joint prep your next pie this way and enjoy. Better yet, try the original. Take-out only.

Romeo's Pizza- Medina, OH

Winner of Best Gourmet Pizza in the US in 2004, and Best Pizza in the Midwest in 2002 and 2004, Romeos offers premium toppings on top of rock solid sauce and crust. Their signature, the Great Ranch and Potato Pizza features Caramelized Onions, Spicy Italian Sausage, Roasted Red Potatoes, and Bacon Ranch sauce. With 6 different cheeses, 5 different sauces, 14 vegetables, 12 meats, and 3 crusts to choose from, only the most dedicated will ever run out of ideas for pizzas. Take-out or delivery only.

Wedgewood Fernandos Pizza - Austintown, OH (near Youngstown)

What happens when you sell the best pizzas with the best ingredients at a low cost? You get a pizza factory that relies on high volume and word of mouth to stay in business year after year. According to a 1994 interview, the average weekend night sees 2000 of just meduim pizzas leave the door. The signature topping is their salami which is shredded onto the pizza. If you eat in, you will take your pizza to your seat, purchase bottled drinks, and take care of yourself. This no-nonsense approach keeps costs low and much needed staff manning the phones and the rather impressive wall of ovens. Expect a fantastic sauce, crunchy crust that somehow never loses all of its bite even days later, and to always have your order in 20 minutes. Eat-in, take-out only.
