Hi Albert, I loved your web site http://pizzatherapy.com
and the reason I am writing is to see if you could tell me:

1) why Sally's is called
Sally's Apizza.

And 2) Why is the "a" before the word pizza. Thanks so much.

My response:

Thanks so much for writing.

I love these kinds of questions:

The first one is easy:

Sally's was named for:

Salvatore Consiglio. He was actually a nephew of Frank Pepe's.

He learned how to make pizza from Frank, then went off on his own to found Sally's (Actually he an his brother started Sally's together...)

Now the question as to why people in New Haven call pizza, apizza?
(Sounds like ah-beets)

My opinion is that it was a way the Italians pronunced pizza.

For example I noticed that in my Italian grandmother when she would talk. She would throw in an extra syllable.

That's my opinion and the name stuck...

It's not pizza: its a-pizza

pizza on earth,

albert
